Image Naming Tips for Nikon Cameras & PhotoMatch

Change the Camera’s Image Prefix – Make it easier to identify the camera used for a specific image folder. The default prefix for any Nikon camera is DSC (DSC_1234). Change each camera’s SC portion of the DSC prefix to match the last two digits of the camera’s serial number. Examples: D05, D27, D91…..This makes it very easy to identify the camera used when reviewing images. It also eliminates the chance of two photographers overwriting each others images if they accidentally use the same image folder/roll for an event with PhotoMatch.

To change the Prefix, go to the Shooting Menu and then select File Naming. Click here to view a short video clip from Nikon’s website showing this procedure.

Set the File Number Sequence option to ON – This will ensure that if you remove a memory card and replace it with a new card, the camera will continue numbering sequentially where it left off. If the File Number Sequence menu is turned OFF, the camera will begin numbering the images on the secondary memory card with 0001. If you are still using the same image folder in PhotoMatch, the new image 0001 would overwrite the original 0001.

To turn on the File Number Sequence option, go to the Custom Setting Menu, then the Shooting/display sub-menu, then the d5/File number sequence menu.

While you are in this menu, hit the reset option so that the camera begins at 0001 and will not roll over until 9999 images have been taken.

Multi-Day Events – If doing multi-day events, at a minimum, you should change memory cards and folders daily. Always create new image folders/rolls for each new memory card used.
